Nettie Lawson Oglesbee Nursing Scholarship

Nettie Lawson Oglesbee Nursing Scholarship

Nettie Ruby Lawson was born on November 11, 1910, in Marion, South Carolina. The oldest of four children, Nettie developed a deep love of learning from a young age, quickly advancing in school despite a late start due to her family’s frequent moves. Known for her curiosity and strong memory, she was an avid reader and a lifelong learner.

Although her formal education was cut short after seventh grade, reflecting the limited opportunities for women at the time, Nettie remained determined to continue learning. After leaving home as a teenager, she built a life in Georgia with her husband, Allen Doughty Oglesbee, raising three children and managing the family’s affairs while staying active in her church and community.

Nettie’s dream of earning a high school diploma never faded. At age 59, she proudly earned her GED and immediately enrolled in vocational nursing school. By 61, she became a Licensed Practical Nurse and spent nearly a decade caring for patients in need of medical support. She viewed her nursing career as one of her greatest achievements.

Nettie Oglesbee’s story is a testament to the power of perseverance and the belief that it’s never too late to pursue your goals. This scholarship honors her legacy by supporting students who demonstrate a similar commitment to education and personal growth regardless of age or circumstance.
